Being spiritually dead means being separated from God, unable to experience His life, love, and fellowship due to sin. You may have an interest in spiritual things, but you do not have a saving relationship with God through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ.
As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved (Ephesians 2:1-5).
You have repented and trusted in Jesus for salvation! You are excited about the new life in Christ, but you’re not exactly sure how to live or what to believe. You have questions about the Bible and the Christian faith. You have a hunger for God’s Word.
Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready (1 Cor. 3:1-2).
You know the Father and are growing in the Word. You are learning to walk in the light, confess sin, and love others. Yet you may still be tossed by immaturity. You need correction, accountability, and a deeper theological grounding as you learn to walk by the Spirit daily.
11 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. 12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil (Hebrews 5:11-14).
(1) Begin giving. (2) Begin serving (3) Join a small group. (4) Attend a membership/next steps class.
You consistently pursue Christlikeness through Spiritual disciplines such as Scripture, prayer, and obedience. You serve faithfully and love sacrificially. You desire a life of Holiness. You handle trials with unwavering faith and stability. Others look to you for wisdom, counsel, and spiritual strength.
6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. 8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ (Colossians 2:6-8).
(1) Become a member. (2) Become a ministry leader. (3) Share your faith. (4) Begin reproducing disciples.
You intentionally invest in specific people for their spiritual growth. You initiate gospel conversations, disciple believers, and equip others to serve. You model repentance, humility, and holiness. You have discernment. You are a spiritual parent and not an adult because parents reproduce! You can feed yourself and others with God’s word while continuing to grow in your own walk with the Lord.
19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age (Matthew 28:19-20).
